A First Aid and Rescue Skills Training to Prevent Disaster Risks

SRD held a training session on first aid and rescue skills to prevent disaster risks for people with disabilities (PwD) in the Hai An, Hai Vinh and Hai Chanh communes in Hai Lang district of Quang Tri province from the 25th to the 28th of July 2015. The session fell under the “Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction for people with disabilities in Quang Tri Province” project.

There were 25 participants who were members of the PwD groups being supported in the three aforementioned communes. They were taught first aid and rescue skills within the first two days. These skills will allow them to proactively support the vulnerable groups, especially PwD in their local areas. Therefore, it contributes to enhancing the capacity of the communities with regards to PwD in disaster risk reduction. The content of the session included common injuries  that can happen to PwD, first aid and rescue skills to address victim protection and tend to their corresponding transportation, unconsciousness, bleeding, bone fracture, burns and water-related accidents.

The trainers offered both theoretical knowledge and demonstrated each skillset to the participants. In the final two days, the training focused on knowledge surrounding communications and behavior change communications to encourage communities taking part in communications activities. The participants had multiple chances to practice Q&A strategies, listening, explanation and administrative techniques in their communities. They also learned  the steps of producing a communications plan so to create a communications plan for each commune. After the training,  a consensus was reached that a  communications plans should be implemented in the three communes in a theatrical format that combines entertaining activities with communications activities. The activity is a commitment to  celebrating the International Day for Disaster Reduction on October 13th in each commune.

The participants practiced first aid skills in the mock situation 

A facilitator of the training and a specialist at the Quang Tri Red Cross shared his feelings after the session saying, “Among the training sessions aimed at the elderly and PwD that I have participated up until now, I think the training was the best in meeting all of our requirements. The participants practiced first aid skills and victim transportation in the mock situation with satisfactory results. Furthermore, they listened well and asked good questions that were relevant to local conditions and lessons learned for the benefit of other communes.”
