Under the “Vietnam Forests and Deltas” (VFD) project, SRD teamed up with the National Agriculture Extension Center (NAEC) and the VFD Project Management Board to organize a workshop on developing climate-smart agriculture (CSA) for agricultural officials at provincial and district levels in Thanh Hoa from May 27- 29, 2015.
Attendees of the workshop included 30 officials from the Provincial Department of Agriculture Extension, the Farming and Breeding Sub-Department of the Department of Agriculture Rural Development, the Agriculture Extension Sub-Department, veterinary clinics, and plant protection stations in the Muong Lat, Ba Thuoc, Thuong Xuan, Thach Thanh and Ngoc Lac mountainous districts. The trainers were experts from SRD, the VFD project, and NAEC members specializing in CSA. The objectives of the workshop were to improve and increase the knowledge of officials at the district and provincial levels on climate change and smart agriculture so that they can serve as a foundation for communities to develop a local CSA model.
During the three-day workshop, the trainers lectured participants on climate change, sustainable development, and the conceptualization of smart agriculture. Some typical CSA models were presented, such as the CSA model that Stichting Nederlandse Vrijwilligers (SNV) implemented, the CSA model that SRD implemented, the climate-smart farming model that the NAEC implemented, and the climate-smart residues management model from SNV.
After the workshop, participants were better able to understand the manifestations, causes, and main impacts of climate change on Vietnam in general and more specifically in the Thanh Hoa province. Participants also increased their knowledge of the specific effects of climate change on agricultural activities in Thanh Hoa, the main contents of a CSA, and identified some CSA models relevant to provincial conditions that can be replicated.
In addition, the workshop also discussed coordination mechanisms for and the responsibilities of stakeholders in supporting farmers who choose to apply a CSA model. They also made plans to organize the training workshop in other districts for extension officials in June and July of 2015.
The workshop on Climate Smart Agriculture development under the VFD project has also been held in Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces.
