REHABILITATION LEARNING AND INDEPENDENT LIVING
To help local communities and households having people living with disabilities learn further community-based rehabilitation and to encourage independent living and accessibility for people with disabilities, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) facilitated a 2-day rehabilitation sharing and learning event in the Quang Tri province from the 22nd to the 23rd of April. This sharing and learning event was organised as a part of the ongoing project “Together We Can” (VM075) funded by Caritas Australia and DFAT. There was a total of 35 participants at the event from the Trieu Thanh, Trieu Thuan, and Trieu Tai communes, some of the participants were people with disabilities (PWDs), caregivers to those with a disability, or a collaborator who assists with their communes at-home rehabilitation visits.
The participants altogether looked back on the different activities focusing on community-based rehabilitation and home-based healthcare within the project in the past time and shared what they had learned, what they had seen and what could be improved for better implementation and effectiveness in the coming years. In addition, with an aim to increase accessibility and independence for people living with disabilities including mobility difficulties, the participants discussed and were guided through how to use the various types of mobility aids such as walkers, canes or wheelchairs and the many different but simple rehabilitation exercises and mobility techniques. These exercises can not only improve the health and daily living of a person with a disability but also give them more independence and make them less dependent on their caregivers, at the same time enable the caregivers to have more time for farming and housework. It also gives caregivers and collaborators more experience and confidence with their skills. The participants all got to practice these different techniques and exercises for themselves throughout the event to give them experience whilst in a safe learning environment.
