Three Major Benefits from Climate Smart Agriculture

On December 21st, in Hanoi, the Network of Vietnamese Non-governmental Organizations and Climate Change (VNGO&CC) organized a workshop “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Vietnam: Challenges and Solutions”.

At the workshop, representatives of NGOs and agricultural extension organizations presented the practical benefits and lessons learned, which were drawn from actual CSA projects in recent years. These projects served 3 major goals: to ensure food security, contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector and support people to take action to adapt to climate change in each area.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa – Deputy Director of the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) emphasized that CSA was not a single model for sustainable development. It was an approach to identify and adjust these models according to the defined criteria. SRD integrated CSA into the models to improve livelihoods in the areas of farming, animal husbandry and forestry. It increased income for local people and improve the environment, while enhancing the awareness of people about the relationship between climate change and agriculture activities.

A key challenge in encouraging the replication of the CSA model in Vietnam was identified by many experts, such as which effective way for local people to build and implement the policies related to CSA. The method of coping with climate change has been integrated into the policy system on green growth and sustainable development, from the national level to local level. However, it was still heavy on the technical solutions in which CSA was mentioned, while not focusing on the coordination of all sectors to approach and develop CSA.

The comments at the workshop were recorded and contributed to related ministries and branches as a basis for the gradual completion of a strategic framework for CSA in Vietnam in the coming period.
