October 16th and 17th 2019: In collaboration with; the People's Committee, Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Gio My Commune; SRD held drills to respond to natural disasters in Cam Pho Village, Gio My Commune.
With the aim of integrating People with Disabilities (PwDs) and reinforcing the local flood and storm prevention plan, the drills practiced some hypothetical situations that may occur in reality. The drills included; early warning, early evacuation, support to protect the houses and engage the participation of people with disabilities in making village-level disaster prevention planning.
Up to 200 participants were involved, representing district leaders, People's Committee of Gio My Commune and other project communes, nine PwD clubs and more than 20 households in Rao village, Cam Pho village, Go My commune.
Speaking at the end of the drills, Mr. Duong Duc Hanh, Vice Chairman of People's Committee of the District, the Project Steering Committee leader highly appreciated the collaboration and command of the local authorities in organizing the activities.
Ms. H.T.H, Chairwoman of Trung Hai PwD Club stated, “This is a practical activity that help a lot of people and especially people with disabilities like me in preparing and actively preventing in case of natural disasters.”
Mr. T.X.L, People's Committee of Gio My Commune Chairman shared, “Gio My is a low-lying area, so this activity gives us a lot of practical experience that help people realise and be better understand what to do before, during and after a disaster, especially early warning and evacuating PwDs. ”
Mr. N.N.Q, Youth Union of Gio My Commune said, “Each drill is an opportunity to help local volunteers to practice first aid skills, to take the initiative and proficiency in providing first aid for people, to support households with people with disabilities in case a storm or a flood occurs, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the project for caring and supporting Gio My commune to organize successful and meaningful drill activities”.
