On November 7th and 8th, 2019, the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) collaborated with the Steering Committee of the "Empowering People with Disabilities" project to organize a training to share the Methods of Assets-Based Community Development (ABCD). Participants included the twenty-nine key members of the nine PWDs Clubs in project communes of Gio Linh district.
Members shared many success stories and participated in active interviews, practicing a number of community resource discovery tools such as physical and natural resources, social resources, financial resources and human resources. They discussed and visualized the future of the club and the community in respect to the usage and development of available resources.
Training activities also helped members discover their internal strengths, build positive thinking, and be resourceful. Participants described the training as "exciting", "easy to understand", "confident", "open", "active", "sociable", and "creative”.
Mr. V.L – a Member of the PWD of Gio Viet Commune shared, “joining this activity, I feel very happy, very excited. In the past, I used to feel awkward at home, but today I'm excited. The more I involve myself, the more I learn. I find this ABCD method very useful. It helps me to change the way to look at everything to be simpler and I am more positive about my inner strength as a basis for development. ”
Ms. Tr.T.T - member of the group of parents of disabled children in Gio Chau commune said that “this training is very comfortable and easy to understand. People have the opportunity to learn and discover their talents. The ABCD method has helped me gain a lot of experience in group activities, solidarity, mobilization of participation, and at the same time, learn how to present confidently in front of the crowd”.
Ms. T.T.Th - a relative of PWDs in Gio Linh town said that the training provided information on the ABCD method that was useful for her and all of the participants. “I learned a lot of things, new things, and gained good relationships. And above all, I learned the way to think positively to simplify things”.
