The meeting of project working group in terms of the project implementation (Quarter 2/2022)

The Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) is in charge of organizing the project "Mangrove and climate protection combined with income generation for vulnerable communities - VM069," which is being carried out in Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board and Mui Ca Mau National Park in cooperation with the Ca Mau Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ca Mau Provincial Women's Union, and local partners. The project's objectives include boosting climate resilience, developing mangrove forests, promoting carbon sequestration, strengthening biodiversity conservation, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods and social inclusion for underprivileged and vulnerable populations in the Mekong Delta.

In the second quarter of 2022, SRD worked with local partners to organize a project working group meeting and carry out an efficient test of the project model at Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board and Mui Ca Mau National Park.

Attending the meeting and field trip, there were the participation of Mrs. Vu Thi Bich Hop – Executive Director of SRD, Mr. Tran Van Thuc - Deputy Director of Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, head of the District People's Committee, the Commune People's Committee and the leaders of the Village Forest Self-Management Groups (VSFMG).

To sum up, after 1 year of running the project in Ca Mau which has established 14 forestry self-management groups, each group is equipped with GPS navigation equipment and protective clothing to go to the forest. Conducted a survey of mangrove forest standard plots in terms of coverage, species, tree quality, and forest volume. Conducted 14 online training courses in the project implementation area on Plant and Wildlife Mapping; Documenting fluctuations, patrols, and reporting of violations. Organised 05 meetings between the community, members of the Self Forest Management Team and Mui Ca Mau National Park on forestry policies and laws, the policy of forest land allocation and the implementation of contract management models forest. Support many livelihood models for people in the project implementation area such as: raising oysters, clams, and making sauce,… The initial step that makes a great contribution to the process of implementing the plan to respond to climate change, increasing the adaptability for local communities.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director of Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development cum Head of the Project Coordination Working Group Tran Van Thuc highly appreciated the results that the project has been implemented in the province. In the future, it is anticipated that the SRD Project would require more solutions in addition to the ones executed in 2022 in order to support greater livelihoods for people in coastal areas. Particularly, Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will closely coordinate with the project to implement activities with positive results.

 With the 2-phase cockle, Vop, and shrimp livelihood models implemented in two areas, the participants highly appreciated the model's significance when piloted and deployed at the project. Although the initial implementation process faced many difficulties due to population characteristics, natural conditions, and unfavorable weather, .... has yielded very positive initial results. The implementation of the model is suitable to the current needs of the household, has good adaptability under the mangrove canopy, improves production efficiency, stabilizes livelihoods, and helps the community to adapt better to climate change, increasingly acute locally.
