Enhancing the capacity of people with disabilities in disaster risk reduction

From 7th to 9th February, the project titled “Inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) for people with disabilities” held three training workshops about disaster risk reduction and prevention for people with disabilities (PwD) in three communes of Hai Chanh, Hai An and Hai Vinh, in Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province. The workshops were participated by 180 participants who are PwDs, their relatives and other vulnerable groups in the three communes.
The aims of these classes are providing knowledge about disaster risk prevention and reduction and supporting vulnerable families in developing disaster management plans. To be more specific, attendees were provided with overview of natural disaster, climate change impacts on their communes, and solutions to reduce vulnerability of PwDs. Moreover, they are also equipped with know-how on what to do during disasters and how to make disaster risk management plans before, during and after disasters

As a coastal district of Quang Tri province, Hai Lang is often directly affected by tropical cyclones and floods. Besides this, there are more 3600 PwDs including over 800 children with disabilities. Hence, improving the capacity of PwDs in DRR and promoting their participation of in disaster risk management will help local people to deal with disasters more comprehensively.

The training workshops on DRR is an activity of the project “Inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) for people with disabilities” implemented in the communes of Hai Vinh, Hai An and Hai Chanh, in Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province with financial support from Caritas Australia. Through adopting Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction for PwDs approaches, the project aims at improving PwD’s capacity to better cope with disaster and reduce their vulnerability.
