RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND GENDER IN THE PROJECT “MANGROVE AND CLIMATE PROTECTION COMBINE WITH INCOME GENERATION FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES” – VM069

The project named “Mangrove and climate protection combine with income generation for vulnerable communities” has been implemented for 3 years starting from April 2021, in Dat Mui commune of Mui Ca Mau National Park and Tam Giang Dong commune under the Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board.

The goal of the project is to increase the carbon accumulation of mangroves through efforts of forest conservation and development, livelihood improvement for poor and vulnerable communities living in mangroves, without compromising the protection of the environment and mangroves, to integrate into national and provincial policies regarding climatic protections in the mangroves-a unique but vulnerable ecosystem

Within the framework of the project, to assess the results of the project's goals in the livelihoods section, the research team of SRD has also collected the current socioeconomic status and livelihoods of people in the area as a premise to develop a sustainable and effective livelihood model.

In May and June, nearly 400 households have productive land and landless households in the area were surveyed to collect data by using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), questionnaires, and group discussions.

Assessment content includes:

Assess the status of income of households living in the project area, types of livelihoods, socio-cultural issues, and people's participation in formal and informal community organizations.

Assess the status and awareness of gender issues of people in the community.

Assess the awareness of communities about the biodiversity of the mangroves, the livelihoods associated with the diversity, and the importance of the forest and its biodiversity. Discuss solutions and recommendations in protecting biodiversity, protecting, and developing mangroves related to sustainable livelihoods.

The research has identified the main local livelihood models such as shrimp farming under the mangroves, blood cockle, snail, clam farming, fishing, net fishing, etc. Identify the socio-economic status of households in the project area in Mui Ca Mau National Park and Tam Giang Forest Management Board through indicators of income, accumulation, and livelihood models. Identify the status of productive land, effectiveness, and impacts on mangrove forests of existing livelihood models of households.

In addition, research activities have assessed the impacts of natural disasters, mangrove forest degradation, climate change, etc. on household livelihoods and existing impacts with the participation of local people.

The information from the research greatly contributes to providing input for the project and serves as a basis for implementing activities as well as evaluating the effectiveness of the project.
