In Home Health Checks for People with Disabilities (PwDs)

As part of the wide range of initiatives related to the " Supporting the People with Disabilities" project funded by Caritas, Australia, SRD held activities surrounding" In home health checks for People with Disabilities (PwDs)" between the 13th and 15th of June 2015 in the project's two new communes of Trung Hai and Trung Son, in the Gio Linh district.

With the support of the consultants, the local authorities and families with PwDs, SRD's officers held home visits to assess the health of PwD's according to the project's list. They also counseled them on accurate heath care, therapy and rehabilitation. In addition, the consultants guided the simple rehab exercises of PwDs that suited each type of disability and created personal media records for PwDs participating in the activity.

In home health checks were conducted for people with severe disabilities like mental impairment, congenital heart disease, PwDs living in difficult conditions and in remote areas.The project also held cottage hospital based health checks for people with less severe disabilities. In the two communes,23 PwDs were supported with in home health checks and 22 PwDs at the cottage hospital.

Thanks to the practical activities, the local PwDs have better conditions to improve their health both physically and mentally which will reduce the burden on the families and the communities. There are 700 PwDs receiving support from the project in Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province.

***Supporting People with Disabilities (PwD) is a cross-cutting issue integrated into all of SRD's projects. "Supporting People with Disabilities in Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province" is one of the typical projects relating to PwDs that has been implemented since April 2012.
Gio Linh is one of the poorest districts of Quang Tri province. It has a total population of 72, 749 people and an area of 47,225 ha. Being a district that was severely affected by the American War, Gio LInh has the largest number of people exposed to Agent Orange associated with a high number of PwD ( there are 6873 people and children with disabilities).
-Expected outcomes of the project:
-100% of PwDs have the possibility to recover and are consulted about the suitable health care, therapy and rehabilitation of their condition.
-100% of PwDs examined have their own medical records.
- 70% of PwDs examined have the possibility for a successful recovery.
