“Social organizations in Vietnam desire to contribute to the process of developing and implementing the Climate Change National Adaptation Plan.” This is the message given at the forum “Social Organizations in Vietnam toward the Climate Change National Adaptation Plan was held on May 24th in Hanoi".

The forum was organized with the participation of leaders of Department of Climate Change; Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Department of Science, Technology and Environment; Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Small Grant Program, Global Environment Facility, UNDP and social organizations in Phu Tho province, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Hanoi .

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang, Deputy Director of the Department of Climate Change said that climate change is getting more and more intense, affecting and causing greater damage to all aspects of socio-economic life, communities and environment, natural resources of Vietnam. Climate change is really a challenge for sustainable development. The Vietnamese Government advocates proactive response to climate change and has issued many important policies and documents; especially, National Target Program responding to climate change and green growth in the period of 2016-2020, Plan to implement the Paris Agreement are implemented. In order to fulfill commitments in the Paris Agreement, the Government assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to lead the development of a National Adaptation Plan on Climate Change (NAP) for the period of 2021-2030 and a vision of 2050. Department of Climate Change will counsel local ministries, international organizations, social organizations and submit it to the Government in the end of year.

At the seminar, Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hop, Chair of VNGO & CC Network shared that Vietnam social organizations in various fields have contributed to the efforts to adapt to climate change through many programs; specific studies and practical projects and at both local and national levels for the common purpose of limiting the effects of climate change on the socio-economic environment. Hundreds of initiatives and actions to adapt to climate change, disaster risk reduction in many areas, many different localities in the country have been supported by social organizations. With many forms of proactive, creative and transparent implementation, social organizations have created significant effects in enhancing the awareness and adaptive capacity and climate resilience of communities and stakeholders. Since 2008, social organizations in Vietnam have established VNGO & CC Networks and CCWG Networks to enhance the effectiveness of contribution and cooperation with stakeholders.

This seminar is an activity with specific contents of cooperation in the Cooperation Memorandum on Climate Change for the period of 2019-2023 which was signed between the Department of Climate Change and the signed VNGO & CC and CCWG Networks. The forum was funded by the Small Grant Program, UNDP, Global Environment Facility through the Project "Strengthening the role of social organizations in the process of developing the National Adaptation Plan". The project is implemented by the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in collaboration with VNGO & CC and CCWG Networks.
