TRAINING ON USING FOREST CHANGE MONITORING SYSTEM

Within the framework of the project activities ‘Empowering social organizations and local communities to effectively participate in the North Central Emission Reduction Program’, funded by the World Bank through the Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB), Nepal implemented by the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), the training on how to use and apply the near real-time vegetation change monitoring system (Terra-I) lasted for 2 days (May 9-10) in Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province. The 43 participants were officials of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nghe An province, People's Committee of Tuong Duong district, Forest Protection Department, Tuong Duong District Protective Forest Management Board, social organizations in Nghe An and Tuong Duong districts, representatives of people in Tam Quang, Tam Dinh and Tam Thai communes.
Opening the training session on May 9, representatives of SRD introduced about the project on empowering social organizations and communities to effectively participate in the North Central Emission Reduction Program and the idea of constructing a forest change independent Monitoring Mechanism using Terra-I technology for CSOs and local communities (FCIM); preconditions and gaps for participation of local social organizations and communities in forest change monitoring. Terra-I experts from the Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) also introduced the design and technology using the Terra-I tool, a well-researched and elaborated forest monitoring system which have many advantages. The Terra-I system detects forest changes close to real-time using completely available data for free; it does not require much from users; Data on forest change are updated every 16 days.
The next day of the training, participants were given detailed instructions on how to use the Terra-I system by experts. With the trend of 4.0 revolutions, social organizations as well as local communities were very excited to learn how to use and access Terra-I website, locate the deforestation point by phone and practice step-by-step how to use it at the training session. At the end of the training session, the participants shared: "This Terra-I system is really useful and modern, we all want to have more training on practical skills and deeper understanding about Terra-I in the near future”
