Sharing Sessions on Disability Inclusion in Disaster Risk Reduction

In November 2020, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) organized 03 sharing sessions on disability inclusion in disaster risk reduction (DRR) for 100 people with disabilities (PwDs) and their caregivers who are members of the three clubs for PwDs in 3 communes of Gio Quang, Gio Hai and Phong Binh. With the aim of building capacity to respond to and include people with disabilities in disaster risk management; shared topics include common disasters in local areas; vulnerable groups and necessary actions to ensure the safety of lives and assets; early warning and evacuation; drawing village hazard maps to illustrate prone areas, households with support in early warning and evacuation; evacuation routes and shelters; do's and don'ts before, during, and after natural disasters; household preparedness plan and local experiences after the recent floods and storms in October and November 2020 in central Vietnam.

Through sharing and group discussion, PwDs and their caregivers have strengthened practical skills and lessons such as preparation is essential and safety is always the first because natural disasters are always unpredictable. For households with members who have severe disabilities, the elderly, the sick and children, it is very important to keep up with the news and follow local authorities' instructions on early evacuation.

At the end of the activity, each participant is given a set of tools including a plastic bucket, a chargeable flashlight, a rechargeable lamp and a life jacket. The activity took place before and after the period when Central provinces, including Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province, suffered a lot from damage caused by the tropical storms and floods and was held within the framework of the “Empowering people with disabilities” project (VM064) funded by Caritas Australia and DFAT.
