BASELINE SURVEY ON FOREST STATUS AND FOREST PROTECTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT TAM GIANG PROTECTION FOREST MANAGEMENT BOARD AND MUI CA MAU NATIONAL PARK, CA MAU PROVINCE - KEY FINDINGS
In the framework of the project named “Climate and mangrove protection combined with income improvement for vulnerable communities” which has been implemented in 3 years since April, in Dat Mui commune of Mui Ca Mau National Park and Tam Giang Dong commune under the Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board, the project will implement activity “Baseline survey for project VM069 at Mui Ca Mau National Park and Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board, Ca Mau province” to obtain the necessary information and input data for monitoring, implementation, and evaluation. It is in the context of global warming that carbon sequestration by forest ecosystems has received a lot of research attention, especially for mangroves. With the threat of sea-level rise, there is an urgent need to collect mangrove biomass information.
Research with decimals, synthesize all information on existing carbon stocks, information on mangrove management systems and structures in the project area, and information in the forestry sector. Thereby as a basis for evaluating and implementing the next activities of the project and monitoring the progress and results of the project implementation. Deploying activities in 139 households contracted to protect protection forests and production forests in Tam Giang Dong commune, Nam Can district and 199 households contracted for special protection in Dat Mui commune, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau Province.

With the typical sampling method as instructed by UNFCCC (2015). There were 60 sample plots at the am Giang Protection Forest Management Board (of which 20 were located sample plots) and 40 and 40 sample plots in Mui Ca Mau national park (out of 20 sited sample plots) were established. In the sampling plots, number all the trees from 1 to n (using a plastic sign to stick them in the trunk), for the sample plots established for long-term monitoring.
The criteria of forest trees are determined at the field such as the name of tree species, root circumference, tree height, tree quality, canopy cover. The current status of the forest in the project area is determined to be species Rhizophora apiculata planted forest, which people combine with aquaculture under the forest canopy.

From field survey data, mangrove biomass was determined using the calculation formula proposed by Komiyama et al. (2005) for mangroves in Southeast Asia, The amount of carbon occupied by aboveground mangroves will be monitored during the three years of project implementation. The study also proposes solutions that contribute to better forest management and protection, thereby helping to increase the biomass of mangroves.
