The National Consultation Workshop on VPA/FLEGT held by the VNFOREST on 21 Oct 2016. This is the third national consultation workshop on this matter and also is the last one before Vietnam and EU make a joint statement about the conclusion of the negotiation process on 18 November 2016. About 120 participants from ministries, provinces, private sector, business associations and CSOs, including SRD and some members of the VNGO-FLEGT network, attended the workshop.

In this workshop, Ms. Nguyen Tuong Van, the Deputy Director of Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation (DOSTIC - VNFOREST), Head of the Standing Office for FLEGT provided updates about the VPA/FLEGT negotiation process; the VNA structure; the commitments made by both sides; expected benefits and obligations arising from signing this agreement and the negotiation, preparation and implementation roadmap. More details on the new areas such as: Imported timber verification, Organizational classification system, Verification of export and FLEGT licensing were presented by other officials from the Standing Office for FLEGT. Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, Deputy Director of VNFOREST participated in the panelists and concluded the workshop.

In the plenary section, Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hop, the Executive Director of SRD and Chair of the Steering Committee of the VNGO-FLEGT network, was invited to the panel together with the Deputy General Director of the VNFOREST, representative from the General Department of Vietnam Custom and VIFOREST.

During the panel discussion, the participants and the panelists dialogued about the issues such as classification of organizations by independent party, framework and mechanism for CSOs to participate in monitoring the VPA implementation and difficulties faced by forest dependent households once VPA is implemented.
